It is mainly driven by the precipitation via the process of infiltration. Soil moisture is a very heterogeneous variable and varies on small scales with soil properties and drainage patterns. Satellite measurements integrate over relative large-scale areas, with the presence of vegetation adding complexity to the interpretation. Soil moisture is a key parameter in numerous environmental studies including hydrology, meteorology and agriculture, and is recognized as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV) by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). The SWI product provides daily information about moisture conditions in different soil layers. It includes a quality flag (QFLAG) indicating the availability of SSM measurements for SWI calculations, and a Surface State Flag (SSF) indicating frozen or snow covered soils. Daily observations are available for the continental Europe in the spatial resolution of 1 km and with the temporal extent from January 2015 to present. This product is first designed to fit the requirements of the Global component of the Copernicus Land service. It can be also useful for all applications related to environment monitoring. SWI1km products were generated by the Global Land Service of Copernicus, the Earth Observation programme of the European Commission. The research leading to the current version of the product has received funding from various European Commission Research and Technical Development programs. This product has been generated from Sentinel-1 C-band SAR observations distributed by ESA and from Metop-ASCAT data distributed by EUMETSAT. The SWI algorithm, originally developed at TU Wien and later improved by other research groups, uses an infiltration model describing the relation between surface soil moisture (SSM) and profile soil moisture as a function of time. The algorithm is based on a two-layer water balance model to estimate profile soil moisture from SSM retrieved from satellite radar data. The remotely sensed topsoil represents the first layer and the second layer extends downwards from the bottom of the surface layer. In this model, the water content of the reservoir layer is described in terms of an Index, which is controlled only by the past soil moisture conditions in the surface layer in a way that the influence of measurements decreases by increasing time. The SWI processing algorithm uses near-real-time SSM products as input to generate daily SWI images. Therefore a computational adaption of SWI algorithm was made based on a recursive formulation. In this method, a gain factor is introduced that relates past SWI measurements to current measurements. SWI images are calculated for eight different T values (2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, 60, 100) together with the respective quality flags. The SWI quality flag is a parameter related to the number of available SSM measurements used for calculation of SWI_T at time t. It is also calculated by using a recursive formulation and expressed in percentage after normalization.
