Lake Ice Extent (raster 250 m), Continental Europe, daily - version 2

The Lake Ice Extent (LIE) is monitored using optical and thermal infrared satellite data, and it classifies a section of the freshwater body on a daily basis as 1) Fully snow-covered ice, 2) Partially snow-covered or snow-free ice, and 3) Open water. The data is available in near real time in a spatial resolution of 250 m and with the temporal extent from July the 1st, onwards. In June 2024, the data input sensor was transferred from Terra MODIS (VERSION 1.2.1) to NOAA-20 VIIRS (VERSION 2.2.1), and the area was extended from the Baltic region to cover Continental Europe.

Classification is provided only for cloud free pixels, with a dedicated cloud mask. The gridded data product covers Continental Europe with 250 m (0.0025 degree) resolution; however, original VIIRS data were in 375 m resolution. The LIE product can have several important applications from climate change monitoring and hydrological forecasting to winter transport and recreational activity on lakes.

Purpose

This product is first designed to fulfil the requirements of the Global Land component of Land Service of THE Copernicus program. The data is also useful in many other climate and environment applications.

Credit

LIE products were generated by the Global Component of the Land Monitoring Service, Lot 2- Cryosphere product centre in the Copernicus Earth Observation programme of the European Commission. The research leading to the current version of the product has received funding from various European Commission Research and Technical Development programs. The product has been generated from NOAA-20 VIIRS (copyright NASA).

The Copernicus component is governed by Regulation (EU) No 2021/696 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 April 2021 establishing the Union Space Programme and the European Union Agency for the Space Programme and repealing Regulations (EU) No 912/2010, (EU) No 1285/2013 and (EU) No 377/2014 and Decision No 541/2014/EU. Within the Copernicus component, a portfolio of land monitoring activities has been delegated by the European Union to the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the DG Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.



The Copernicus land monitoring products and services are made available on a principle of full, open and free access, as established by the Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) No 1159/2013 of 12 July 2013.



Free, full and open access to the products and services of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service is made on the conditions that:



1. When distributing or communicating Copernicus Land Monitoring Service products and services (data, software scripts, web services, user and methodological documentation and similar) to the public, users shall inform the public of the source of these products and services.



2. Where the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service products and services have been adapted or modified by the user, the user shall clearly state this.



3. Users shall make sure not to convey the impression to the public that the user's activities are officially endorsed by the European Union.
