WISE statistics - nutrients (1990-2021), 2023

WISE Statistics – Nutrients

The WISE Statistics are aggregated data products for creation of the Freshwater indicators "Oxygen consuming substances in European rivers" and "Nutrients in Freshwater in Europe", which are published at the EEA website.

The data tables provides several aggregation levels, e.g. waterbody, country, Europe. The EEA combines and aggregates the reported data from the annual WISE SoE data flows. Data can be reported on three levels: Disaggregated (individual observations on monitoring site level), aggregated (annual aggregation of observations per monitoring site), aggregated by water body (annual aggregation of observations per water body). The Nutrients AggregatedData table combines reported disaggregated and aggregated data, while all higher aggregation levels can also include data aggregated by water body.

For more information on the data processing, see the Ancillary tables for WISE Statistics on both Nutrients and Biology:

AncillaryData – TimeSeries: Provides an overview of which timeseries of properties and waterbody categories are created for the WISE Statistics.

AncillaryData – Classification: Provides an overview of classification types and class boundaries for the different combinations of properties and waterbody categories.

AncillaryData – QualityControl: Gives an overview of quality control (QC) statements, and whether records with a given statement are include/excluded when processing the WISE Statistics data.

The disaggregated data, aggregated data, and aggregated data by water body is also published in Waterbase – Water Quality ICM, see: https://www.eea.europa.eu/en/datahub/datahubitem-view/fbf3717c-cd7b-4785-933a-d0cf510542e1

The WISE Statistics and Waterbase – Water Quality ICM are based on reported data from the WISE SoE - WISE-6 dataflow, see Reporting Obligations Database (ROD) entry: https://rod.eionet.europa.eu/obligations/14

Statement

The WISE Statistics – nutrients is created from data reported under the annual WISE SoE - WISE-6 dataflow. The processing is revised and run on an annual basis.

WISE-6 and QC:

WISE-6 water quality reporting was introduced in 2019 and fully replaced WISE-4 water quality reporting in 2020. WISE-6 has a similar structure to WISE-4 but also allows the reporting of concentrations in matrices such as biota and sediment, and with improved performance and better options for feedback on reported data. WISE-6 data is subjected to automatic QC (see WISE CDR QC tests here: https://cdr.eionet.europa.eu/help/WISE_SoE/wise6/WISE6_CDRQC_tests.xlsx and WISE6 ObservedProperty QC reference here: https://cdr.eionet.europa.eu/help/WISE_SoE/wise6/WISE6_ObservedProperty_QC_reference.xlsx) upon reporting and harvesting and later also to expert QC. The quality controlled data is published as Waterbase – Water Quality ICM in the EEA Datahub.

Ancillary tables:

When processing the WISE Statistics from Waterbase – Water Quality ICM data, the QC statements from automatic and expert QC are used to exclude problematic records. The QC statements that results in exclusion of Waterbase – Water Quality ICM records from the WISE Statistics can be seen in the “ancillarytable_qualitycontrol” table.

The selection of time series that are created for WISE Statistics are defined in the table “ancillarydata_timeseries”.

The classification used for a given time series are noted in the “ancillarydata_classification”

The Ancillary tables can be downloaded – see “Links”.
