EEA Marine waters for analysis - INTERNAL VERSION, Oct. 2022

This vector dataset originates from the second edition of Marine waters used in Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), which landward boundaries were subsequentially harmonised with map "EEA coastline for analysis" while inner (subregion) boundaries were harmonised with "Europe Seas - version 1, Dec. 2018". EEA Marine waters for analysis dataset thus contains 44 units, distinguished between EU Member States (EU27+UK), MSFD regions/subregions, and type ("Watercolumn and seabed" and "Seabed only" areas).

The "Watercolumn and seabed" areas mark the area from the Member State coastline to 200 NM from the coast except for the "Watercolumn and seabed" areas, claimed by Greece, which extend from the coastline to 6 NM from the coast. "Seabed only" areas represent extended continental shelf beyond 200 NM where some Member States have advanced seabed /subsoil claims.

This map is a harmonised dataset serving for analysis purposes only and shall not be considered as an official or legally-binding map representing marine borders in accordance with international laws. This map shall be used without prejudice to the agreements that will be concluded between Member States or between Member States and non-EU Countries in respect of their marine borders.

Statement

As stated in the abstract, this dataset was created from the second edition of Marine waters used in Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), which landward boundaries were subsequentially harmonised with map "EEA coastline for analysis" (see https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/srv/eng/catalog.search#/metadata/db4cfdd3-0687-4460-a2c7-fd10ca29c214) while inner (subregion) boundaries were harmonised with "Europe Seas - version 1, Dec. 2018" (see https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/srv/eng/catalog.search#/metadata/7ce1666b-fcdc-4cf3-91f0-96b58ad14e99). The present dataset "EEA Marine waters for analysis" contains 44 units, distinguishing between EU Member States (EU27+UK), MSFD regions/subregions, and type ("Watercolumn and seabed" and "Seabed only" areas).

The map should not be understood as representing international marine borders. To this end, the following disclaimer shall accompany the map: "This map is a harmonised dataset serving for analysis purposes only and shall not be considered as an official or legally-binding map representing marine borders in accordance with international laws. This map shall be used without prejudice to the agreements that will be concluded between Member States or between Member States and non-EU Countries in respect of their marine borders.".

As they are not intended to provide boundaries of Member States' marine waters, the landward boundaries used do not constitute the formal boundary of these marine waters, but instead use a harmonised coastline boundary for cartographic consistency.

In the North East Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea regions, the outer boundaries are intended to fully encompass the marine waters of the relevant Member States. This includes the "Seabed only" areas where these extend beyond "Water column and seabed" areas. The boundaries shown in the present map include those "Seabed only" areas that have so far been reported by the Member States concerned.
