Practically, it quantifies the spatial extent of the vegetation. Because it is independent from the illumination direction and it is sensitive to the vegetation amount, FCover is a very good candidate for the replacement of classical vegetation indices for the monitoring of ecosystems. The product at 333m resolution is provided in Near Real Time and consolidated in the next six 10-days periods. This product is first designed to fit the requirements of the Global component of Land Monitoring Service of the Copernicus programme. It can be also useful for all applications related to the environment monitoring. FCOVER products are generated by the Land Monitoring Service of Copernicus, the Earth Observation programme of the European Commission. The research leading to the current version of the product has received funding from various European Commission Research and Technical Development programs. The product is based on PROBA-V 333m data (copyright BELSPO and distribution by ESA) and Sentinel-3 333m data (copyright EU Copernicus and distribution by ESA). One neural network is set-up per sensor and per vegetation type (evergreen broadleaf forest or not). Then, smoothing and gap filling is achieved over a compositing temporal window that may be dissymmetric as in the case of the near-real time situation or at the beginning of the time series.
