Land Surface Phenology 2014-present (raster 300 m), global, yearly - version 2-

Land Surface Phenology describes vegetation changes observed from satellite remote sensing and constitutes therefore an aggregate signal from heterogeneous surface conditions that may not be representative of any single plant species response. LSP indicates the timing, date of occurrence, and corresponding value of the vegetation index used, of key phases of the vegetation development cycle. In particular, phenological metrics related to the start, end of growing season, length of the season and maximum development, seasonal total and partly integrals (as productivity parameters), as well as growth and senescence rated, intra-annual coefficient of variation, etc. are provided.

The LSP dataset include the following products:

- End-of-Season Date: Provides the date when the vegetation growing season ends in the time profile of the Plant Phenology Index. The end-of-season occurs, by definition, when the Plant Phenology Index value reaches 15% of the season amplitude during the green-down period. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- End-of-Season Value: Provides the value of the Plant Phenology Index at the end of the vegetation growing season. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Season Amplitude: Provides the difference between the maximum and minimum Plant Phenology Index values reached during the season. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Season Length: Provides the difference between the maximum and minimum Plant Phenology Index values reached during the season. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Season Maximum Date: Provides the date in the vegetation growing season when the maximum Plant Phenology Index value is reached. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Season Maximum Value: Provides the maximum (peak) value that the Plant Phenology Index reaches during the vegetation growing season. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Season Minimum Value: Provides the average Plant Phenology Index value of the minima on left and right sides of each season. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Seasonal Productivity: Provides the growing season integral computed as sum of all daily Plant Phenology Index values between the dates of the season start and end, minus their base level value. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Slope of the Green-down Period: Provides the slope of the green-down or senescent period (Right Slope, RSLOPE). The slope of the green-down or senescent period (RSLOPE) expresses the rate of change in the values of the Plant Phenology Index at the day when the vegetation growing season ends. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Slope of the Green-up Period: Provides the Slope of the green-up period (Left Slope, LSLOPE). The slope of the green-up period (LSLOPE) expresses the rate of change in the values of the Plant Phenology Index (PPI) at the day when the vegetation growing season starts. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Start-of-Season Date: Provides the date when the vegetation growing season starts in the time profile of the Plant Phenology Index. The start-of-season occurs, by definition, when the Plant Phenology Index value reaches 25% of the season amplitude during the green-up period. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Start-of-Season Value: Provides the value of the Plant Phenology Index at the start of the vegetation growing season. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Total Productivity: Provides the growing season integral computed as the sum of all daily Plant Phenology Index values between the dates of the season start and end. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

- Quality Flag: Indicates the quality of the global Vegetation Phenology and Productivity Parameters, in the form of a confidence level. The data at global level are updated in the first quarter of each year. The data are available from 2023 to the present at about 300 m spatial resolution.

Statement

The input data for the LSP estimation are global 5-day PPI time series calculated from PROBA-V and Sentinel-3/OLCI BRDF normalized top-of-canopy reflectances (TOC-r) in the red band and in the near infrared (NIR) band. The BRDF algorithm normalizes the TOC-r to the nadir viewing at 10:00AM local solar time. Besides using the red and NIR bands of TOC-r BRDF data in the Plant Phenology Index (PPI) calculation, the product uses the quality information layer which provides information on the quality of the BRDF-correction.The PPI data are fed through to TIMESAT 4.2 for smoothing, computation of phenology and productivity parameters, and derivation of quality flags.
